Catch of the Day

Catch of the Day
Acrylic and Prismacolor, 1996

This idea was in my head about a year before I even started painting it. I had the idea, photographed myself holding one of the girls you find teasing the fan-boys at Dragon Con, and sat on the photos until I was ready to cast my other two fishermen. At last I contacted an artist friend of mine (Jim Peavy) and another friend who Jim had used as Santa Claus on a Wonder cover (Dan Segal). Dan objected out of embarrassment once he saw the finished version because he is a little skittish about nudity, but I think he at last accepted it. Anyway, this was my first attempt and best attempt at diminishing the sensual side of nudity by adding humor. Incidentally I later saw a Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post painting of a New England fisherman carrying off a mermaid in a lobster trap and I like mine better. By the way, Rockwell's version received many complaints because although no nipples showed, it was obvious that his mermaid also was topless.
