Acrylic and Prismacolor, 1995 |
This, like the Star Trek Captains painting, was done on spec for possible inclusion in Wonder Magazine. What a shame I started hitting my stride as an artist just before the magazine went belly up. Rod Bennett had always talked about doing an issue on what he always termed "fireside science fiction" - that sci-fi that is most closely associated with Jules Verne and H.G.Wells, Victorian sense of design such as the plush red seats in the George Pal movie of the Time Machine, English gentlemen with suits, pipes, and sideburns talking over their travels to the center of the Earth around a fireplace. I didn't want to just depict one story or simply copy a still from a film, so I came up with the idea of airship travel, a captain coming home to his family, mechanical toys and even a robot butler made out of a stove. Two friends from my church posed for photos. I chose Barbara Pinson for the woman not only because she is a professional model (still stunning in her 40s!) but because she owned the dress, the chair and something like the carpet! The dog shown in this version is hers, as well - you can see the original version here if you like.
